Driving Test Tips

Some useful tips for both your THEORY and PRACTICAL driving test

Feeling nervous ?
If the answer is yes to this question do not panic as most people remember the feeling of being nervous leading up to taking their Theory test and their Practical driving test.

Nerves are not always a bad thing, quite often when you are nervous you have increased levels of adrenaline this can actually be beneficial in maintaining focus. Being too laid back in your approach to your theory test or practical driving test could result in you not preparing fully or simply giving off the wrong impression to the examiner.

To help control your nerves we at www.drivinglessonfinder.co.uk have come up with some useful tips to make the process as stress free as possible.

The THEORY test

1. Would you have sat a maths exam without ever picking up a maths book ?

A) No ...... well at least we hope you wouldn't ;-)

The best piece of advice we can give you at driving lesson finder is to ensure you are Prepared. This means not only glancing at your THEORY TEST book but carry out example tests that you can find on the DVLA website. This will not only be great practise but also hopefully dispel some nerves as you will be more prepared for what type of questions you can expect during the exam.

2 Why don't i just try and cheat ?

The driving Theory test is their for a reason. If you don't have a grasp of the highway code, road signs etc how can you expect to be a safe motorist.
Do your homework/ preparation and you'll be fine. PS forget about taking cheat bits of paper writing on your hand as the exam is treated seriously and you don't want to be kicked out !

3 Do you know where the Theory test centre is ?

It is very important that you find out exactly where you are heading prior to your test date. It is also advisable that you plan the route you will take to get to the test centre. This will enable you to relax as much as possible and focus on what is important on the day.

Finally breath deeply try to visualise success and good luck.

The PRACTICAL test

With your practical driving test try to utilise all of the above tips and remember you have the help of your driving instructor whom you should 'lean' on for tips throughout your lessons.

Are you confident enough to take your test ?

This is a question you can answer with the assistance of your driving instructor. If you are confident you have had enough lessons and your instructor is confident in your driving capabilities then you can both come to the decision to book your PRACTICAL driving test.

What date should you book your test for ?

Some people think booking the earliest possible test date is paramount. But please consider factors such as friends birthdays, dentist appointments etc that could have an adverse affect on your test. eg the day after a friends birthday celebrations may not be the best preparation for your practical driving test. So it is advisable to plan your test date and ensure you can concentrate fully on what is important, after all you've put a lot of hard work into passing your driving test so why not give yourself the best possible chance of success.

What if during my practical driving test I'm taken on unfamiliar roads ?

This is quite often the case as you wont know the exact route the examiner is going to take you on. To be a competent motorist you will be expected to be capable of safely tackling new routes. There are a couple of things to 'assist' you in this instance. Why not request your driving instructor takes you from the test centre on various routes you may be taken on by the examiner prior to your test. Or why not check out www.google.co.uk/maps to navigate through the local streets. All preparation is good preparation !

What if i make a mistake during my practical test ?

Do not panic! It is quite common for people to make minor errors during a practical driving test. If the examiner can see it for what it is and providing you correct this doesn't mean you have failed. Just try to remember the examiner isn't their to 'trip you up', they are more interested in competent and safe driving.

What are the most common reasons for failure ?

There are common areas which people tend to fail their practical driving test examine these closely and try to avoid making the same mistakes.

  1. Observation at junctions - ineffective or bad observation and judgement
  2. Reverse parking - ineffective observation and/ or lack of accuracy
  3. Use of mirrors - not checking often enough, and/ or not acting on the information.
